Salary Advance Courses for Teachers | Jump Into PD

HBM 1731 (1 unit)

“I felt isolated and scared in the weeks leading up to my first day as a teacher. I wanted to be great, but didn’t know what I should be doing to start the school year strong.”- Tyler Hester

Learn how to be a more effective K-12 teacher with this 4 part book study series on “The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher (5th edition)”. In the most practical course of this series, you will create a detailed script for your next first two days of school as well as a new outline for your first 2 weeks. One of the most common complaints we have about Teacher PD is when they tell you all the ways in which you need to do better, they totally inspire you, and then right when they’ve got you invested, they end. Teachers are then left to cram all that new planning into what little time they already have. Well teachers, not today. Scroll down to learn more about this course!

*Note that this is part 3 of a 4 course series.

What is covered in HBM1731 The First Days of School 3?

In this third course in this salary advancement course series for teachers, you will read chapter 12 and look back at chapter 14 of the book The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher (5th edition) by Harry and Rosemary Wong. These chapters involve introducing yourself to students and starting class effectively. You will also analyze resources and classroom videos from effective teachers like Tyler Hester (Educators Thriving)Often, being a teacher in a classroom can be like living on your own island. It is not very often that educators are able to peek behind the curtain and see what other teachers are doing, and learn from one another. Even less often are we able to see how the really effective ones start off their school year.

How are some teachers able to maintain complete control of their classroom at all times, while others have to beg their students just to be quiet? What does giving a warning or sending a student to time out look like? What does enforcing a consequence on multiple students at the same time look like? What does “build relationships” with students truly look like?? This course takes you beyond the simple answers and verbal descriptions and aims to SHOW you, not just TELL you, what effective teaching looks like.

Aside from all of that, the majority of this course actually involves doing all of the tasks that come with creating or updating your lesson plans for the first days of the year. Whether you are a new or veteran teacher, if you need units to advance, want to learn how to be a more effective teacher, or just want to have a more organized and calm classroom next year, what are you waiting for? Enroll in this series.

Why do you recommend this book so highly?

Because all the salary advancement courses by Jump Into PD are created by real teachers, we understand the teacher life. This book as well as the other resources used in the assignments for this course hugely influenced Jump into PD Cofounder (and creator of this course series) Jennica Harrison’s approach to classroom management and her plans for the first two weeks of school. All it took was one read and she decided to create a Classroom Management Plan of her own.

Teachers are rarely given specific and actionable tips and tricks, but this book is different. If you have not read it before, we can almost guarantee that it will impact your teaching in MANY ways- new and veteran teachers alike. Aside from the book being so helpful, the coursework we created around the book’s content is straightforward, no fluff, and offers highly valuable teacher professional learning. Where we honestly feel the book may be lacking, we supplement with additional resources, activities, and coursework.

Still not convinced?

1. Watch the video. This is day 3 of Tyler Hester’s series of classroom videos, and the presence of his well-taught procedures and expectations is clear as day the further into the video you watch.

2. Read the book’s reviews on Amazon.

3. Check out the Wong’s website- EffectiveTeaching.org

4. Check out Tyler Hester’s website Educators Thriving.

5. Buy the book BEFORE you enroll!

When should this course be taken?

As of summer 2024, we recommend that teachers plan to complete all four courses before beginning the 2024-2025 school year. Although that may *sound* stressful, if you plan to be in your classroom ANYWAYS (preparing for the year outside your contract hours), you may as well earn units for it. And if your recent experiences have been anything like ours, we definitely could benefit from a bit more preparation before next year…
