This book study course offers an in-depth exploration of effective reading instruction and how to integrate the science of reading principles into a balanced literacy program, with a primary focus on the book “Shifting the Balance” by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the science of reading, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and learn how to incorporate these elements into a holistic approach to literacy instruction. The course provides educators with research-based strategies and practical tools to improve their students’ reading skills, while also addressing the critical elements of a balanced literacy framework.
