Salary Advance Courses for Teachers | Jump Into PD

HBM 1700 (1 unit)

One thing new teachers often do not realize is that ALL teachers, no matter what subject they teach, are English teachers. ALL teachers are responsible for furthering the speaking, reading, and writing skills of students in their classroom. However, without any guidance on how to do this, many new teachers are left to figure it out on their own.

In this fourth course in the series, participants explore chapters 8 and 9 of “Teach Like a Champion 3.0” by Doug Lemov. We dive into the next two sets of immediately implementable techniques coined by the author involving Writing and Discussion that are used by teachers all over the country. These techniques involve concepts like creating writing routines, quick and easy ways to incorporate grammar and syntax into any assignment, facilitating successful student-student discussions, and more. This book is a MUST read for new teachers!

*Note that this is part 4 of a 6 course series. Although it is not required that you complete these courses in order, it is highly recommended you start with part 1 and end with part 6.

Why do you recommend this book so highly?

Because all the salary advancement courses by Jump Into PD are created by real teachers, we understand the teacher life. This book dramatically helped out Jump into PD Cofounder Jennica Harrison when she was a new teacher. She still uses the techniques she learned from this book to this day- as we expect that you will, as well. Aside from the book being so helpful, the coursework we created around the book’s content is straightforward, no fluff, and offers highly valuable teacher professional learning.

Still not convinced? Check out this post on the Teacher Subreddit…. Proof that other teachers love this book, too!

What is covered in the other Teach Like a Champion courses?

As you continue on to the other courses in this 6 part series, you will explore additional techniques coined by Lemov like setting the tone at the start of class, engineering efficiency, tips for minimizing student misbehavior, and other actionable methods to elevate your teaching skills far beyond what you thought was possible.
