Salary Advance Courses for Teachers | Jump Into PD

HBM 1725 (1 unit)

The idea that F’s and failing grades motivate students to improve is proven to be a myth, so why have our grading systems remain unchanged since the Industrial Revolution?

Explore the game-changing insights in the book “Grading for Equity” by Joe Feldman. His words will make you question the grading practices of the past hundred years as well as your own. His analysis of traditional grading practices and highlighting of the vast inequities they perpetuate will fundamentally change your outlook on what grades mean and how they are determined in your classroom. Aside from the theory (which is incredibly important), he also provides actionable advice and strategies teachers can begin using immediately on their own or with a group of colleagues. What is covered in HBM1725 Grading for Equity 1?

In this first course in the series, you will explore the book Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman from the the Prologue through Chapter 5. These chapters include why grading is such a difficult topic for teachers to discuss, a brief history of how (and why) our traditional grading system was created and its close connection to the rise of industrialization, common misconceptions about grading and what motivates students in the classroom, and the insidious impact of implicit bias on teachers’ thoughts, views, and actions involving their gradebook.

Why do you recommend this book so highly?

Because all the salary advancement courses by Jump Into PD are created by real teachers, we understand the teacher life. This book hugely influenced Jump into PD Cofounder Jennica Harrison’s philosophy and grading system. All it took was one read and she decided to switch to using standards based grading, a 0-4 scale, rubrics, not penalizing for late work, and offering retakes. She has never looked back but is also fully aware of the aches and pains associated with the transition from traditional grading to standards based. Aside from the book being so helpful, the coursework we created around the book’s content is straightforward, no fluff, and offers highly valuable teacher professional learning.
